Working upstream to Brentford from the Lower Thames

The method of calculating passages into the Grand Union Canal at Brentford from the Lower Thames is similar to working out a transfer passage between Teddington and Brentford and details are provided in that section. The main difference is that you will want to use the flood tide to assist your passage, and not the ebb as is the case when coming downstream.

If leaving central London, or even further downriver, you will wish to utilise as much of the flood tide as possible. If you start your journey at low water, you will have ample time to reach Brentford from as far down as the Woolwich ferry, assuming a cruiser speed of 3 to 4 knots.

If you are locking out of Limehouse Basin, or South Dock, you should make sure that you are ready to leave as soon as there is enough water over the cill of the lock. London Bridge to Brentford is about 13 miles so in a slow boat you won't have much time to waste!
